Original Sub Sandwich

Updated: Jan 29, 2018

Submarine sandwich, hoagie, grinder, hero... this sandwich has many names, but we just call it delicious.

I don't know about you, but for me, lunch is the hardest meal of the day to find appealing recipes or ideas for. I love sandwiches, but they get a little boring when it's two pieces of plain bread, bologna and cheese. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the simplicity, but brown-bagging it to work everyday inspires the need for some variety! That's what we're here for. Each week, we'll be exploring different types of sandwiches from all over the world, white pizzas, and lots of fresh and fun lunch box ideas. We'll mostly keep it quick and easy, but we'll throw in some extra fancy stuff here and there.

Starting it off with an Original

Can you really ever go wrong with crusty bread, deli meats, fresh veggies, and a signature sauce?

The original sub sandwich is so versatile and is so broadly defined, that all you really need to make the sandwich is some crusty bread, deli meats, fresh veggies, and signature sauce. In this case, we used Beano's Original Submarine Dressing. Can you really ever go wrong with crusty bread, deli meats, fresh veggies, and a signature sauce? Not if you're a sandwich lover like me!

The bread: if you're making this at lunchtime and have access to a toaster oven or oven, then, by all means, toast the roll to golden perfection. If you're like the rest of us, eating your lunch at your desk, make sure the bread is crusty on the outside and soft on the inside.

Between the bread: the deli meats and cheese are really up to you, but our favorite trio of deli meat is hard salami (rolled up), baked ham, and capacola. For veggies, we traditional: lettuce and tomato. You can spice it up with peperoncini, or add some red onion and black olives. Of course, you can't go wrong with Beano's Sub Dressing!
